Devils Knot Essay - 1081 Words

On May 6, 1993, three eight year old boys were found savagely murdered in West Memphis Arkansas. The investigation lacks hard evidence and a suspect, and the police automatically turn their focus on Satanism. Unfortunately, three teenage boys became the prime suspects: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley. Because they wore black and listened to hard rock music, they were outcasts. With nothing but circumstantial evidence mounted upon these teenage boys, the community lets a Satanic Panic outweigh the facts. All the while, there is more than just circumstantial evidence that points to one of the victims stepfather, John Mark Byers. He had the means, motive, and opportunity to commit this heinous crime. It is very†¦show more content†¦The absence of blood on the bank and lack of mosquito bites on the boys’ bodies suggest that they were murdered at another location and simply dumped at the creek. This leads to the speculation that the boys were with someone that they trusted at another location when they were killed. Christopher was the only one of the boys that had defensive wounds. This piece of evidence implies to two things: first, all of the boys were comfortable with their attacker, and second, Christopher had possibly been abused by the attacker before and knew what was coming (Steel). This would lead one to believe that Chris was the target. The police were convinced that they had found their killers in the three teenagers after hearing and recording Jessie’s so called confession to the crime and his tying Damien and Jason to it as well. Even though alibis were presented by the boys the police ignored them and went ahead with the arrests. It is rather obvious, that basing the whole case and investigation on the coerced confession given by Jessie is a seriously flawed decision on the part of the West Memphis police and brings the credibility of the department into question. Police discovered a knife in the Byers’ household belonging to John Mark Byers. Forensics stated that the type of blade on the knife was the same type used to cut and mutilate the three young boys; yet the blood found on the knife was never analyzed. In the beginning of this year, a research paper was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. This paper discussed a clinical trial of which they used vitamin E and Memantine as a way to reduce the effects of AD. This trial started in 2007, but before that, there were trials studying the effects of antioxidants in AD patients. Both trials hypothesized that the use of antioxidants and another variable could reduce the effects of AD. One trial, studying the effects of antioxidants on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, which are commonly found in patients with AD, was a double blind study, which took place between 2006 and 2008. However, this raised the patient’s cognitive decline, which would is the opposite of what the next trail wanted to do. The next trail thought that the use of antioxidants would reduce the progression of mild to moderate AD. This trial began in August of 2007 and ended in September of 2012. The participants were given 1 of 4 drugs: alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), memantine, the combination, or a placebo. Alpha tocopherol, or vitamin E, is a fat-soluble vitamin and antioxidant. It has been studied in patients with moderately sever AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In the patients with moderately sever AD, it was found that vitamin E was effective in the dose of 2000 ID/d, however it was not effective in patients with MCI. Memantine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, was used in 2 randomized clinical trials before and both featured AD patients. Each of these studies however were only 6 months, meaning there was not enough time to study the long term effects of using this drug. The benefits of self-managed learning process essentially involve a thorough and appropriate process of examining the needs and drawbacks of individuals and helps focusing on those areas of learning for each individual. Therefore, this process is hugely effective for learning at an organizational level. Besides, when taking charge of ones own learning, it is easier to know the weak points of oneself and then focus on those areas. As an individual learner, I can effectively utilize the self-managed learning techniques for setting effective learning goals and thereby take up a gradual progress as I continue through the program. The self-managed learning (SMI) process includes a four-step process initiated by the analysis of the different characteristics, study and learning habits and usual surrounding situation of a particular individual. Furthermore, the organized methods of SMI require setting up of the order or sequence of learning activities and build up the structure of the routine accordingly. Apart from that, self-managed learning establishes a timeline or schedule for timely completion of each of the learning activities involved in the program. Besides, it helps clearly understanding the most suitable approach to follow to take the learning in the correct direction. Self-directed learning helps me to promote the natural development of the self-confidence as well as life satisfaction within me. It also reflects a belief within me to live my own lives as well as follow my own paths. It helps me to finish my work within the given time so that I can undertake my learning procedures efficiently. SMI is necessarily beneficial for my future personal development as it already gave me the ability to engage myself in self-reflection as well as self-evaluation. From organizational perspective, the self-managed learning courses are easier to support than the traditional training programs as the cost of SMI is far less than that of the traditional training programs. Moreover, salaries arranged for personnel would be significantly reduced as the employees would be engaging in self-directed learning and managers would be transitioned to SMI coaches. SMI helps me to get motivated towards my work and helps me to gain confident in my work. Therefore, most of the time there was quite a lot of confusion, conflict and disagreement before reaching to a final decision or conclusion. Problem 2: Diversity: Another significant problem was in relation to the diverse work group that I was involved. The impacts of diversity were obviously creating several issues such as communication gap or problems to cope up with the present culture and work place surroundings. Factors: Surroundings of the workplace and diverse culture Causes: Different people working together under the same roof were essentially resulting to frequent issues and friction from time to time.
